Langkawi in December: Weather, Crowds, Booking Tips

Aerial view of forested islands and clear turquoise water off Langkawi, Kedah, under a dry-season sky

Short answer: December is when Langkawi's dry season properly starts, and it is also when the island fills up. The weather improves sharply from November, but the school-holiday calendar decides how crowded your trip feels, and that calendar is more specific than "Christmas week".

This guide covers Langkawi in December: rain, heat, which dates are busy, the ferry situation, the Koh Lipe boats and how to book. Every number below is tied to a source and a date. Where we could not pin something down, we say so rather than guess.

Langkawi weather in December: drier, hot and still humid

Daytime highs sit around 31 to 32°C and nights around 23 to 26°C, depending on the source. The sea is about 29°C. Humidity hovers near 76 to 77 percent, so "dry season" means less rain, not dry air. You will still sweat on the walk to breakfast.

The rainfall numbers are where the sources disagree, so here are the ones we found side by side. Treat the exact millimetres as rough. The pattern is the useful part: November is far wetter than December.

Rainfall for November and December from three public sources, checked 21 October 2026.
Source November rainfall December rainfall
Climates to Travel (2000 to 2020 monthly averages) 193 mm about 58 mm
Trip.com weather guide about 214 mm about 87 mm
Holiday Weather not checked 94 mm

In both sources that give both months, December has less than half of November's rain. Climates to Travel also puts the rainy days at 16 in November and 8 in December. Other sites count far more rainy days for December, so the definition of a "rain day" clearly varies. We would not plan around that number.

Rule of thumb: late November can still be a wet week, and December usually is not.

Dry does not mean shower-free. Trip.com describes December as having occasional showers, so pack a light rain layer. For the full-year picture, see our best time to visit Langkawi guide.

Busy dates: the school holidays matter more than Christmas

The Malaysian year-end school holiday runs 4 to 31 December 2026 for Group A states, which includes Kedah (Langkawi's state). Group B states, including Selangor, Penang and Kuala Lumpur, are off from 5 to 31 December. Those dates come from the Ministry of Education calendar as reported by SAYS and eCentral. The new school year starts on 4 January 2027 according to eCentral only, so confirm that one if it affects you.

Christmas Day is a public holiday and falls on a Friday in 2026. For anyone working Monday to Friday, that makes a three-day weekend on top of a school break that is already running.

If your dates are flexible, the logic is simple. Early December buys quiet at the price of slightly more rain risk. Mid to late December buys the driest weather at the price of the crowds.

Getting to Langkawi in December: ferry warnings and booking early

In late August 2026, ferry operators asked the federal government to speed up dredging of the shipping lanes at Kuala Kedah and Kuala Perlis. They said silt in the lanes raises risk for passenger ferries and can disrupt schedules during peak season (Malay Mail, 30 August 2026). The same report said the ferries can carry up to 25,000 tourists a day at peak and advised buying tickets in advance through the Cuti-Cuti Langkawi app.

We did not find an update on whether the dredging has happened. So treat the mainland ferries as likely to be busy in December, buy your ticket ahead and keep a buffer if you have a flight to catch the same day. Our how to get to Langkawi guide compares flying with the ferry routes. We did not check December flight fares, so we do not quote any.

Koh Lipe boats in December

The boats to Koh Lipe are a seasonal service. Travelfish says speedboats and ferries leave Langkawi's Kuah Jetty for Koh Lipe from 1 November, and that they do not run in low season. It lists three departures from Langkawi, at 08:30, 13:30 and 14:30, and a crossing of at least 90 minutes.

The Travelfish page carries no date, and a ticket listing we checked for 19 October to 1 November 2026 showed a single daily 12:30 departure instead. Those two do not match, so confirm the time with the operator before you plan a day around it. Our Koh Lipe from Langkawi guide covers the crossing itself.

Daylight and sunset: plan outdoor time early

The shortest day of the year is 22 December, with about 11 hours 45 minutes of daylight in Langkawi (sunrisesunset.io). Daylight is limited, so start boat trips and hikes early. If you are heading up the mountain, the cable car and Sky Bridge guide has the crowd strategy.

For a day on the water, our island hopping guide explains how to pick a tour. Sea conditions can change with the weather, so check the forecast the evening before.

Events: nothing confirmed for December

The LADA events calendar listed no upcoming events for November, December or January when we looked on 21 October 2026. Langkawi did hold a New Year countdown with fireworks at Dataran Lang in Kuah to open 2026 (Business Today, 1 January 2026), but we found no announcement that it will repeat. If a countdown matters to you, ask your accommodation closer to the date.

How to book Langkawi for December

The first school holiday date is 44 days from the day we checked, so the booking window is already open. We did not verify December room rates, so we will not quote any. You can measure the holiday premium yourself in two minutes: price the same room for 1 December, 10 December and 24 December on the same site. The gap between those three numbers is what the school calendar costs you.

  • Book rooms and transport together. A room with no ferry or flight is a half plan in a holiday month.
  • Pick your area first. Our where to stay in Langkawi guide compares the beach strip, Kuah and the inland options.
  • Keep one flexible day. A short shower or a delayed ferry should not wreck a plan.
  • Set the budget before the dates. The Langkawi budget guide helps with the daily numbers.

If you want a quieter base away from the beach strip, we run Bambu Getaway inland, about 15 minutes from the airport. Whatever you book, check the cancellation terms first, because December plans change.

Is December worth it? Yes, if you want the driest weather of the year and can handle crowds. If you want quiet, shop the first days of the month or look at the shoulder months in our May shoulder season guide.
